What is bone china?

Let's cover this first. I am sure some of you reading this are asking that very question so I'll answer it here. Bone China was not actually developed in China but Rather in England some time during the 18th century. It was made using bone ash and that's where part of it's name comes from. The China part of the name comes from the fact that it was created to compete with imported Chinese porcelain.

It's main characteristics are it's durability, it's bright white color and it's almost translucent state. It became popular towards the start of the 19th century.

Why choose bone china mugs?

The first reason is their quality. If they are for your home they are fantastic special occasion mugs. They tend to give off a high class aura and will usually catch your guests eyes. I know my own bone china mugs get plenty of compliments when I have relatives over and I often end up with an easy choice for their next gift.

One of the things that makes them stand out are the beautiful decorative patterns that fine China is renowned for. I have put up some photos to give you some examples. The patterns really stand out off the bright white backgrounds and balance decoration with class.

One other point when choosing bone china is it is relatively cheap. A quick search online found me sets of six fine bone china mugs for under $100. For such a small investment they seem really good value. Obviously they are not the cheapest mugs you will find but they do offer something different.

An excellent wedding gift idea

The bone china mug ticks every box you want in a wedding gift. They aren't going to cost you a fortune yet they are practical and something a little special. Most people buy house appliances for newly weds and a small set of high quality mugs can really fit the bill. Just make sure it's not a volatile relationship... I kid!

How to tell

If you are after something made out of bone china and just happen to find yourself at a stall that stocks what look like bone china one way to tell is hold the piece up to the light and put your hand behind it. You should be able to see your fingers through the china.

If you flick the edge of the cup (not too rough) it should make a clear ring sound, though it can take time and effort to become good at identifying the sound.

Precautions

Though bone china coffee mugs are more durable that they look you should be wary of washing them in a dishwasher. The chemicals in the machine can over time damage the pattern and even weaken the mug.

Also a lot of bone china mugs have what is called “metallic rims” which can look like a small gold rim on the top of the mug. This means you should never place it in a microwave as microwaving metal is very dangerous.

Full Sets

Of course while this hub is focused on mugs I should just briefly mention to any newcomers to the world of china that there are also bone china plates out there too and you can even buy complimentary sets that have the same pattern as the mugs.
