To most golfers the game is not really a competition between you and the other golfers. Although a competitive edge to a game can result in some good fun and banter the real game is improving your own game of golf. Players spend ages looking to improve their swing. They also spend time hunting the perfect equipment. Hybrid golf clubs are a great way to improve a recreational players game.

What is a hybrid?

A hybrid golf club, also known as utility or rescue clubs, is as the name suggests a mix of irons and woods to try and take the best characteristics from both. It tries to balance the distance got from your long irons with a more forgiving wood like face. While initially the clubs got some bad press the design flaws have been eradicated and the clubs fine tuned and are now even used by professional players.

The Design

Unlike irons or woods, hybrid golf clubs are comparatively new and as such there is little design convention but the most common aspects are short stiffer shafts like irons with a more open face life fairway woods. Though they are not generally as deep as the woods. The head is generally made of hollow steel. As I said though some manufacturers have a different approach and make hybrids that look more like irons. The best you can do is try them out and see what you feel comfortable with. If you have a friend who owns a few ask to try them out.

If you aren't so lucky there are plenty of websites available that offer hybrid golf club reviews.

If you are really keen you can even get taylor made hyprid golf clubs but that is way outide of the scope of this hub.

Effects of a Hybrid

A hybrid golf club gets more height than the iron it replaces. It also puts more back spin on the ball than either a wood or iron do. This gives the ball a straighter drop and also some bite so that it doesn't roll once it lands.

This can be used to your advantage. If you are trying to get a ball onto a green but have a hazard to deal with in front of it and you get adventurous and go for it you are at risk of landing short of the green to account for the roll and end up in the hazard or you make the green but then continue to roll past it. The hybrid gives you a better chance of landing on the green.

Should I use a hybrid golf club?

Short answer yes. Even 65% of PGA golfers now carry at least one hybrid golf club in their bag. You will find you really benefit from it if you dread taking out those long irons because of how unforgiving they are on accuracy.

The 24/38 rule

This a rule golf club makers have agreed on which states that most golfers cannot consistently hit an iron with 24 degrees or less of loft and 38 or more inches of length. For most golfers that means they are unable to use anything longer than a 5 iron with great consistency.

I agree totally Shottersf. Till two years ago, I was very fond of my 5 Wood, but was not consistent with the 3 Wood or Iron.

However, after having tried some hybrids, I did away with fairway woods and the 3 and 4 irons. Instead, I carry the following hybrids: Cleveland Halo 1i(16 degrees), Nike CPRs (18, 22 and 26 degrees.) Ever since doing that, I am scoring better, and enjoying the game so much more too.
